Sustainability

A Second Life for Wool

Checker, Basket, and Micro Tweed each contain a high content (70%) of post-consumer recycled material from the fashion industry. Reutilizing discarded wool garments to create new yarn preserves resources and places less stress on the environment. These three products can contribute to the LEED Materials and Resources credit for recycled content and have been certified by the mill to GRS, the Global Recycled Standard 4.0. This collection is free of added chemistry including finishes, PFAS, flame retardants, and antimicrobials.

“The craft that the suppliers bring to the recycling process is impressive, I love that you can see the evidence of the raw materials in each heathered yarn.”

FAQs

Wool is a natural fiber derived from the fleece or coat of sheep. Wool’s inherent characteristics make it a sustainable choice for textiles. It is rapidly-renewable resource (sheep can be shorn annually!) and the fiber is biodegradable and recyclable.

Recycled Wool is a natural fiber reusing wool waste. Recycling wool and using discarded wool waste preserves resources (less sheep need to be raised- so there is less grazing and land use for that practice if wool is re-used).

In the case of these Designtex wool styles, the recycled wool is “Post consumer” because it comes from discarded wool clothing waste being recycled into new fiber. This fiber has been 3rd party verified to document its chain of custody as legitimate post-consumer recycled wool, and certified to the GRS Global Recycled Standard.

The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is a supply chain traceability standard for tracking and verifying the content of recycled materials in a final product.
